This study examines the motivation, viewing behavior, and satisfaction of the main factors of using VOD, which are considered to affect media development and media audience. To get the synchronous structural insight of VOD use characteristics, a measurement tool was developed through a three-step process. The factor analysis result consisted nine factors of viewing behavior that differs from existing motivation of watching television: ‘watching all episodes at a time,’ ‘watching previous programs,’ ‘movable and convenience,’ ‘selective watching,’ ‘self-oriented watching,’ ‘recreation and relaxation,’ ‘issue contents use,’ ‘restricted media environment’, and ‘overseas contents and movies’. As a result of this study, motivation of VOD use and unprecedented viewing behavior of binge watching and re-watching significantly influenced the motivation of satisfaction obtained from VOD use. Through this, we understood the media consumption behavior in self-directed media environment, such as VOD, and so does the necessity of follow-up research. The study is meaningful in that it can be applied to analysis of nonlinear media -new media- as to empirically verifying the importance and the influence of using behavior in a new approach to understand media phenomena in digital information society.
