The period when Korea was the most vigorous in terms of modern history can be said to be during the Japanese colonial period. Particularly in the 1920s, it was possible to shape the will of struggle in the form of literary works. In the 1930s, however, it was internalized in the works due to the oppression existing during that time. Therefore, it is a way to broaden the horizons of our literature by studying Lee Young-ak’s poems, the representative of the realism poet of the period of the 1930s.
In the 1930s, the works of Lee Young-ak’s poems were showcased by many works that feature centrally the theme of nature. The nature which acts as the material of his poetry was, primarily, a mediator that acted effectively in accusing the true state of reality. Secondly, it was a material way to express the despair of the negative reality. Third, it also implied that there existed world of hope.
The natural object that indicates the reality functions as a mediator that simultaneously implies both romanticism and non-tragedy, so that the tragic state of reality can be expressed more emphatically. The romanticism of beautiful and peaceful natural objects, including examples such as ‘insects’, ‘flowers’, and ‘leaves’, are more prominent in Lee Young-ak’s Poems.
The image of the river and the sea implicates a negative emotion, a sense of hope, as well as an ideal. The sense of anxiety projected on the ‘river’ leads to mourning and reproach. However, Lee Young-ak does not fix the image of the ‘river’ with these images, but instead draws the image of hope and utopia from the property by which the ‘river’ flows into the ‘sea’.
Finally, in the Lee Young-ak’s Poems, we are presented with the opportunity to find a way to overcome the reality of the present via the providence of nature. Of most note, it reveals the image of the ‘insect’, which pledges spring to sleep, and the will to overcome the hardships of reality through the circulation of natural providence.
This study is meaningful in that it examines the poetic world of the ushak from a stereoscopic perspective by deviating from the study biased toward the loss of hometown, which serves as a kind of paradigm of Lee Young-ak’s poetry of the era.
