My presentation is an attempt to look into the changing world of culture and make central the discipline of artistic practice in education. It suggests that future art teachers educated as artists need to construct fluid, flexible and complex pedagogical repertoires that help them support the diverse needs of pupils and meet the challenges of contemporary schooling. I suggest that art education should be thought of as a “crossroads” discipline centered in art as reflective inquiry and the flexible organizations of pedagogical practice in supporting teaching and learning within the complex and changing ecological contexts of schools.
