This study analyzed characteristics and implications for Organization Frame of contents of elementary social studies textbooks in five countries (the United States, Canada, Japan, Singapore, and the United Kingdom) in order to find alternatives to Organization Frame of contents of Korean elementary social studies textbooks. Implications for Korean elementary social studies textbooks according to the characteristics of the Organization Frame of contents of foreign elementary social studies textbooks are summarized as follows: ‘dilemma of Unity and diversity for Organization Frame of contents’, ‘Seek diversity and efficiency of components of textbook contents’, and ‘the relationship between Organization Frame of contents of textbooks and instruction’. As a result, the followings are suggested regarding the direction of improvement of the Korean elementary social studies textbooks: 1) Introduce various Organization Frame of contents according to grade and contents characteristics; 2) Present ideas for creativity and diversity to create a unique repertoire and style of teacher"s teaching and self-directed learning; and 3) Introducing an authorizing and accreditation system of elementary social studies textbooks.
