Metal artifacts excavated from major ancient tombs in the western part of Gyeongnam province which had been Gara territory were studied with regard to the frequency of discoveries. The study shows that the swords and iron spearheads buried with the dead, commonly considered to be weapons without much function in tombs, were placed likely as items of solemnity representing the status of the buried person as demonstrated by the low frequency of those metal artifacts.
Based on the fact that the frequency of swords, iron spearheads and iron arrowheads found in Okjeon Tumulus site and Yangjeonri Tumulus site is high compared with that of those in Jisandong Tumulus site, the central tumuli of Gara, it is assumed that the buried persons in Okjeon Tumulus site had more military power to protect Dara that was a comparably minor state of the Gaya confederacies and that the reason for high frequency of weapons buried with the dead in Yangjeonri Tumulus site where the existence of people of high position has been hardly recognized is probably their having been the professional warrior class of Gara.
The buried persons in Saengcho, Bangyeje Tumulus site are assumed to have played the main role in local administration governing the subgroups who built Pyeongchon, Bonggyeri Tumulus site respectively, and the reason that a lot of coffin nails were discovered in their tombs is inferred to be the kinship between Gara and Baekje.
