『GREY Club Story』 and 『Raul"s Story』 are showing the point of intellectual youths" worry about and pursuit for "what is modern" or "modern people"s sensation" in Korean society with having Christianity as a medium. Christianity is situated just at the point that a modern individual, who has believed that the world can be recognized through the conceptual activity of rationality, finds the impossibility of awareness on the world. Hyeon, who is the main character in 『GREY Club Story』, is "a human in a window type" as saying of willingly trusting only what is visible, but comes to be concerned about the invisible existence like God or the unknown existence like a woman through the Christian opportunity like Jehovah"s Witness. 『Raul"s Story』 is intensively showing a crack of recognition that the modern entity has, through reproducing a reason of Raul who comes into a conflict between the phenomenal world and the invisible world with the Jesus presence.
The leading characters" thinking aspects of being mediated by Christianity in these two novels are showing two ambivalent worlds for which the modern subject seeks. The perceivable phenomenal world and the world in the thing-in-itself(Noumena) unavailable for being perceived should not be reverted to any sides, and need to exist with maintaining its interval harmoniously. However, the Western modernity based on Christian culture ever exposed a contradiction in which enlightenment itself becomes myth, through being returned to one axis between mythology and enlightenment. The aspects of the epistemological crack in the modern subject, which appeared in these novels, are ultimately converged as a problem of Korean modernity. The process of finding a crack and ambivalence immanent in what is modern with having Christianity as a medium leads to the reflective introspection on Korean society and own self. The power of ratifying the modern subject in these novels comes to discover a fact called Western theory and thought. This self-reflection appears as what raises a critical problem in a novel after this.
