This study focuses on examining “transcendent rhetoric” in documents of Buddhism that guide readers to reach the boarder of absolute freedom beyond material shape. The readers may get a subtle taste of beauty as they follow words that are merely means of figuration, yet still try to lead them beyond its literal meaning toward the profound teachings of Buddha. Therefore this study took the Gatha (Buddhist Song) of the Chan Buddhism Master Yefu Daochuan (冶父道川) from the Southern Song Dynasty, the commentary Buddhist poem on the Diamond Sutra from Mahayana Buddhism, and examined ‘HOW’ he translates the essential and infinite teaching in the Diamond Sutra, “the true emptiness yet holds existence (眞空妙有)”, with limited words. Through this examination this paper discusses “transcendent rhetoric” based on negative expressions, metaphor and symbolic expressions quoted from the Gatha. Regarding Buddhist literature that embraces typically Buddhistic rhetoric, this paper takes a different approach from existing studies that focus on ‘WHAT’ is the meaning of the words, as it discusses ‘HOW’ the literature interprets the profound Buddhists teachings. This may direct future studies on taking a new point of view to the Buddhist literary works.
