This study conducted discourse analysis of Korean language classes for third-year high school students based on Wertsch’s theory, which linked Bakhtin’s concept of voice to speech genres and privileging. After dividing classroom discourse between teacher and students into categories of voice and privileging and examining them, this study found that teacher had a voice of a student preparing for college entrance, a voice of a parent, and a voice of an ordinary person in addition to a voice of a teacher. Such various voices were not polyphonic as Bakhtin insists, rather they turned out to be monophonic voices that were privileged to a specific speech genre so that teacher could establish rules for students and add values to students’ utterance with an identity as someone that is supposed to educate students preparing for a college entrance exam. As for students, they were found to have a voice of a student preparing for a college entrance exam, a voice of a teacher and a voice of a parent. These voices reinforced their identity as a student prepping for college, and, when in a place where only a specific speech was privileged, the students tended to accept a speech genre that was widely used in the classroom. From these findings, this study presents the following implications in relation to Korean language education. First, teacher should change their view on teaching. Second, students need to increase their critical awareness of speaking appropriately to a certain situation, or conventional speech, and improve meta-cognition for listening and speaking when exposed to a new speech. Finally, there is a need for further research on privileging, which could promote people’s understanding and practice of horizontal communication in the classroom that puts a high value on individual identity.
