Empirical studies have reported that subtle linguistic cues in the description of an event have a significant impact on the process of interpreting the event. This study investigated the impact of the voice (active/passive) in the description of the event on the evaluation of the perpetrator and the victim in the intentional and unintentional injury incident. Participants read a scenario about an incident in which one worker intentionally or unintentionally hurt another worker, and rated the level of blame and punishment for the perpetrator, and the level of pain and settlement for the victim. The scenario was described in either a perpetrator-subject active voice or a victim-subject passive voice. In the results, there was a significant interaction between the intention to harm and the voice of the description. In the case of intentional harm, it was assessed that when described in the active voice, the perpetrator should receive greater blame and punishment. Interestingly, the level of the victim’s pain was rated higher in the active voice on compared to the passive voice. The present results demonstrated that the evaluation of the perpetrators and victims of an injury incident can be influenced by the voice of description of the event.
