Report Errors

Rev. John Ross had the following experiences in relation to the Foreign Mission Board of the United Presbyterian Church of Scotland that sent himself to Manchuria in the areas of 1) the translation and publication of Korean Bible, 2) pastoral ministry in the Seogando Korean Valleys in Manchuria, and 3) Christian mission to Koreans within the Korean peninsula over the 1880s and 1890s. First, the Board caused conflict between the two by recommending him the traditional mission methods of evangelism and preaching over Korean Bible translation. In spite of the fact that Manchuria as borderlands included Koreans and maintained expandibility toward Korea, the Board could not apprehend Ross’s motivation to the translation work. Secondly, Ross carried out pastoral ministry for the Koreans in Manchuria in often baptizing Koreans in the Seogando Korean Valleys since 1884, and the Board, by and large, cooperated with him in this work. Thirdly, the Board rejected the proposal of mission to Korea focusing on the Kangge area that Ross strongly made. The Manchuria Mission Committee had a comity agreement with the Korea Mission of the Presbyterian Church in the USA in 1892 and handed over Ross’s ministry in the northernmost part of Korea. Ross’s dream for Korea mission disappeared by the agreement and the Board also lost an opportunity to discuss Korea mission in a positive way.
