Calvin maintained that the true reformation of the Christian religion was different from the Anabaptists’ radical idea of restitution. According to Calvin, Anabaptists’ radical attempt resulted only in arrogant separatism. The purpose of this study is to manifest the focal points and the historical significances of Calvin"s idea of the true reformation by analyzing his argument for infant baptism against the Anabaptists. Calvin"s Institutes(1559) book IV chapter 16 is analyzed because this chapter succinctly summarized what he had discussed beforehand and properly guided his arguments afterward in his other writings. In the first place, this paper deals with Calvin"s emphasis of “God"s consistent covenant of sovereign grace” as the inner essence of baptism which the sacramental reformation should purse and ensure. The next part illuminates Calvin"s hermeneutical principles and methods in defending the validity of infant baptism against the Anabaptists’ “arbitrary” interpretation of the biblical passages. This part ties to clarify Calvin"s idea of “sola scriptura” contrast to the radical views. Finally, the theological purpose of the sacramental reformation in Calvin"s defense of infant baptism is discussed. In conclusion, it is argued that for Calvin the purpose of the reformation should be the whole-hearted devotion only for the glory of God. Therefore, even the hope of the perfection of a Christian, and the pursuit of holiness of the church were considered not as the fundamental standards or the ultimate aims of the reformation but merely as fruits of grace or means of shining God"s glory. Calvin refuted the Anabaptist"s stubborn denial of infant baptism because their radical and rigid idea misunderstood the reformation as a human achievement for perfect holiness. For Calvin the reformation was a pious commitment for the true religion before God.
