The reason why Joseon Dynasty adopted tombs with lime-soil mixture barrier (LSMB, 灰槨墓) was because the thoughts of founders of the Dynasty was based on Neo-Confucian order which was ideology ruling state. Joseon chose Neo-Confucianism of Zhu Xi as the new ruling system and Zhu Xi"s Zhuzi Jiali (The Family Rites of Zhu Xi, 朱子家禮) as the new social regulation. Joseon also introduced Ming"s system in order to systemize the nation"s whole order.
Its effort to legislate Zhuzi Jiali which was adopted as national ritual system was accelerated during King Sejong"s reign. They chose Daming Jili (The Collected Rites of Great Ming, 大明集禮), Ming"s ritual system, based on which Gukjo Oryeeui (National Five Rituals, 國朝五禮儀) was compiled in early years of King Seongjong"s reign. Gukjo Oryeeui include Zhuzi Jiali burial system like Daming Jili in order for Royal household as well as gentry to abide by burial system of Zhuzi Jiali.
Josoen banned stone chambers inside tombs and regulated use of lime-soil mixture barrier instead. However when they adopted LSMB tombs and established them, they did not have enough information about practical examples of the tombs in Ming. Joseon"s misunderstanding about Zhuzi Jiali also caused confusion in its use. For this reason sometimes difference of its construction had arisen. Lime-soil mixture barrier was constructed out of regulations due to supply and demand problem of lime needed for constructing lime-soil mixture barrier. Not enough lime in tomb construction made it difficult to follow books on rites. Tombs that were against the principle are called hoemyo(灰墓) and hoetanmyo(灰炭墓), all of which are a variation of tombs with lime-soil mixture barrier.
