The foundational issue in the contemporary discourse of Christian ethics of love is about the tension between universal nature of agape and particular features of special relations. Generally speaking, agape love is universal in a way that exhorts us to embrace all human beings with equal regard. But simultaneously, those who participate in special relations tend to allow normative room for preferring near neighbors to distant ones. There are two major approaches to the issue of the relationship between particular and universal moral commitments in the Christian tradition. One is a ‘norm-centered’ approach, which focuses on the normative nature of love. Its major proponents include Paul Ramsey, Gene Outka, and Gilbert Meilaender. Grounded in their understanding of the essence of God’s love, they propose universality and altruistic self-sacrifice as normative features of human love. The other is a ‘affective-centered’ approach, which evidently gives the primacy to the special relations such as parent-children, spouse, friendship, co-religionists, and etc. Stephen Post, Stephen Pope, Edward Vacek represent this approach. They maintain that a richer under standing of love can be attained when we put more emphasis on affective dynamics than on normative consideration.
Paul Tillich’s approach is yet a third approach, which I think offers a constructive way in which weaknesses of the other two approaches can be effectively addressed and a path to reconciling them can be traced. Guarding against reducing the issue of ‘the relationship between particular and universal moral commitments’ to a matter of choosing either norm or affection, Tillich takes both norm and affection seriously in discussing and formulating his theory of love. In this paper, I attempt to explicate Tillich’s ethics of love theoretically, proposing desire-centeredness and holistic nature as essential normative features of the ethics. I will proceed by describing his ethics of love and compare it with the other two approaches, with particular attention to the normative content of love and the relationship between agape and special relations. I conclude with some ethical suggestions which can contribute to a richer normative understanding of Christian love.
