The purpose of this study is to develop a teaching material for the course of Practical English for Engineering Students to let the engineering students improve their writing and speaking skills. The development of the teaching material is based on the pre-course needs analysis and post-course questionnaire results. In order to develop a more practical English material to fit their needs, three areas were evaluated with a total of 248 students majoring in engineering. Three areas are appropriacy of the contents, details of the lectures, and suggestions on the material and the course. The findings are as follows. First, over 60 percent of the students responded positively on appropriacy of the contents, and the discussion with engineering-related topics was more preferred than writing and oral presentation. Second, more than three quarters of the students responded that the lectures improved their English proficiency. On the other hand, about a third of the students had difficulty following the course, which could be due to their lack of English writing and speaking experience. Third, as a main suggestion, the students requested that more students’ writing samples with teacher’s feedback should be contained on the material to facilitate noticing of the errors on their writings. Also, they requested for more interactive discussion in English in class. Based on the findings above, this study provides some pedagogical suggestions for the development of textbooks in ESP courses.
