The social activities of the Covenanters were based upon their theology. However, most written sources of the Covenanters do not make any reference to their social work, not because the Covenanters were indifferent to the socio-economic aspects of life, but because seventeenth century observers had more interest in political and ecclesiastical affairs. Above all, memoirs of the Covenanters fastened on the story of the suffering Kirk and the testimonies of individual Christians. What evidence that exists on the Covenanters’s social work must be gleaned from a variety of sources, including sermons, treatises, memoirs and diaries.

The Christian principles underlying the social economic actions of the Covenanters were taught in the Exposition of the Ten Commandments, which is contained in the Short Catechism. Seventeenth century Calvinist theology, with its emphasis on predestination, and calling, and worldly asceticism was extremely important in the determining the day conduct of the people. This chapter will deal first with the theological background of the Covenanters’ socio-economic life in two particular aspects: the calling and asceticism. Then it will discuss the most significant principle of the Christian conduct, that is “Christian love.”
A good conscience was the dominant element in the Covenanters’ ethics. This was also reflected in the discipline of the Church. Before the Church proceeded with any disciplinary action, the first task was to appeal to the sinner’s conscience. It meant that the Church brought the sinner to a sense of guilt as to what he had done. Therefore the 17th century Christians, especially the Covenanters, were demanded to fulfill all the duties of worship, and the duties of their particular callings, stations, and relations. First and foremost the Covenanters were deeply religious people, sincere in word and deed, and zealous for good works.
