This study reviews academic achievements and theological ideas of professor Park, Gon-Taik, a professor of Church History in Chongshin Theological Seminary who will retire from his professorship next February. For 30 years, professor Park has investigated “the history of the ideas of Christian Freedom” focusing mainly on the theology of Jean Calvin. He chose this topic due to his belief in God’s calling for his academic life. Especially, eventful experiences of his study times in France motivated and stimulated his consistent pursuit of this topic. While teaching reformation history and Calvin’s theology at Chongshin Theological seminary, professor Park has produced a number of editions and translations of Calvin’s original latin and french texts. These include Calvin’s treatises, letters, sermons and the 1541 french edition of the Institutes. He has also introduced a number of edited translations of the other protestant reformers in the sixteenth century reformation era as well as those modern french thinkers like Jacques Ellul and Paul Riceour. All of these textual studies and editions have provided him with invaluable materials and insights to develop his own theological ideas. Presenting his understanding of Christian freedom, professor Park has also tried to suggest “Korean Calvinism” and “Christian Renaissance.” For him, “Korean Calvinism” implies an introspective attitude in interpreting and adopting Calvin’s understanding of God’s revelation and its application to the present situation of Korean church. “Christian Renaissance” means the endeavor to create a new model of Christian (reformed) tradition in contemporary oriental-korean culture. The need for this Renaissance, professor Park argues, requires both the sincerity to God’s revelation and the earnest attempt to discover the typical culture in our own civilization. Professor Park’s academic achievements and theological thoughts not only make his suggestion persuasive but also lead us to expect unceasing production of his research works even after retirement.
