Novels and illustrations stand together in the serial novel section in newspapers. This spatial arrangement generates a special reading style for the reader, because the illustrations, which continuously provide the reader new information, are placed where the reader’s eyes regularly pass by. Not only can the reader predict the context through the illustrations, but they can also find a new meaning of the text that they have just read. The illustrations strengthen the process of the reader’s understanding of the text. Regarding the facts that, it influences every corner of the process of communication between the reader and the text, and that it reproduces various elements of novels as it stands independent from the novel, illustrations have the characteristics of a paratext.
We should pay attention to the fact that the illustrations as a paratext not only reflect the context, but also the form of a novel. Illustrations and novels appear as two different forms of medium, but they share the aesthetics structure of a particular genre.
This common structure is the reason why illustrations pave the way for the readers to better understand the features and reading strategies for the genre of the text.
Under this premise, this thesis studies the characteristics of illustration based on detective fiction of the late 1930’s, specifically the novels of Kim Nae-sung. This study will first establish the features of the illustrations in detective novels, further elaborate in relation to the novel, and ultimately, analyze the influence on the reader’s reading-strategy.

소설과 삽화는 동일한 공간에서 함께 존재하고, 이러한 공간적 배치는 독자로 하여금 특수한 방식의 글 읽기를 유도한다. 삽화는 독자의 눈이 지나가는 곳에 위치하면서, 끊임없이 새로운 정보들을 제공한다. 독자는 그림 텍스트를 통해 글 텍스트의 내용을 사전에 예상할 수 있고, 글을 읽는 도중에 삽화를 보면서 글의 내용을 강화할 수 있으며, 반대로 글 텍스트를 다 읽은 후에 그림 텍스트의 의미를 새롭게 이해할 수도 있다. 이처럼 커뮤니케이션의 도처에서 출몰하면서 독자들의 독서 과정에 영향력을 발휘한다는 점에서, 그리고 소설의 다양한 요소를 재현하지만 동시에 소설 외부에서 독립적으로 존재한다는 점에서, 소설 삽화는 곁텍스트(paratext)의 성격을 지닌다.
그런데 이 때, 곁텍스트로서의 삽화가 소설의 내용만이 아니라 형식도 함께 반영한다는 점에 주목할 필요가 있다. 비록 글과 그림이라는 서로 다른 매체 형식으로 나타나지만, 삽화와 소설은 특정한 장르의 미적 구조(aesthetics structure)를 함께 공유한다. 소설 삽화가 독자에게 글 텍스트의 장르적 특징을 알리고, 그 장르에 맞는 글 읽기를 안내할 수 있는 것은 바로 이 때문이다.
이러한 전제 하에, 본 논문은 1930년대 후반의 탐정소설과 삽화가 보여주는 미학적 특성을 연구하고자 한다. 특히 장르 소설이 가진 미학적 특수성이 어떻게 삽화미술을 통해 드러나는지, 그리고 그와 같은 삽화의 미적 특징이 어떻게 다시금 이야기의 장르적 성격을 강화하는지도 살펴볼 것이다. 최종적으로는 이 과정에서 소설과 삽화의 협업이 독자의 독서 전략에 어떤 영향을 미치게 되는지에 대해서도 함께 연구할 것이다.
