This article aims to research the theory of Dharmapāla (530-561) by analyzing the ‘Interdependent Nature of Things(Paratantra-svabhāva)’ considering falseness or truth and that of Jacques Lacan (1901-1981) by examining how ‘the Real’ represents itself in ‘the Symbolic.’ I especially attempt to interpret the thought of J. Lacan from Dharmapāla’s perspective. Thus far there has been no comparative study in this area despite the fact that they explain concretely the psychological structure of human and mental processes. Consequently, I analyzed ‘sublimation’, the process by which ‘the Real’ is represented in ‘the Symbolic’, as follows. First, there is a common area between the theory of J. Lacan and that of Yogācāra in that all of the ultimate states are those transcending the limits of language when we see them from Dharmapāla’s standpoint. In contrast, there is also a difference between them in that ‘the Real’ is the ultimate state which ‘the subject of language’ cannot reach. Thus, the desire to reach ‘the Real’ is regarded as a deficiency in the theory of J. Lacan. Meanwhile, Nirvana is the ultimate state in Yogācāra. When people desire to reach this state and practice diligently by themselves, it is possible for them to experience Nirvana. Second, people can reach the ultimate state by practice in Yogācāra, but there is a different way to reach the state of ‘the Real’ according to Lacan. The subject is able to reach this state by ‘sublimation’, elevating the object to the state of ‘Ding’ in a fantasy. It is a very unique way in that the subject experiences the state by elevating their emotion due to limits which prevent the expression of ‘the Real’ by language in ‘the Symbolic.’
