This paper explores the question, ‘what are crimes?’ fromLacan’s point of view. Lacan argues that crimes do notoriginate from animal instincts remaining in men, butbelongs to the properly human nature. According to him, subjects who commit crimes falling into the Oedipal categoryseem to be coerced to do so by some irresistible force. Thistype of crimes should be understood as “self-punishments” ofthe subjects following the law of the super-ego. The law ofthe super-ego is based on repression closely related to thearbitrary character of the maternal law. But Lacan seeks thepossibility of establishing the paternal symbolic law which isno longer arbitrary, in the concept of sublimation as afunction of Oedipus complex. Such an effect of sublimationcan be accomplished through the secondary identificationwhich has a symbolic character. This paper traces thedialectic of the aggressiveness originating in the “alienation”incurred by the first imaginary identification, and how it results in a production of criminogenic objects. To make thisaccount concrete, this paper analyzes Lynne Ramsay’s filmtitled <We Need to Talk about Kevin> from Lacan’sperspective, and also discusses the therapeutic method heproposes.
