This dissertation was studied by focusing on Chinese character and folk tale of Atka Mackerel, Sandfish, Alaska Pollack. Our ancestors wrote saltwater fish names in Chinese characters, giving them unique meanings. For example, Atka Mackerel of Chinese character (臨淵水魚) represents the ecological features, and another Chinese character(林延壽魚) represents fishing process. But don’t understand the meaning of those two chinese characters, created “folk tale of Atka Mackerel” using rear Chinese character as similar name of the person. Sandfish Chinese character(木魚, 目魚, 銀魚) represents ecological features, while another chinese character(還木魚, 還目魚, 回目魚) indicates the legend of Sandfish. The fitting character for “folk tale of Sandfish” is Taejo of Joseon dynasty Lee Seong-gye. Since the foundation of the Joseon dynasty Hamkyong province received many benefits as a royal birthplace. But after Lee Jing-ok’s the revolt of 1453 and Lee Si-ae’s rebellion of 1467, Hamkyong province given the cold shoulder of treason. And so, people of Hamkyong province quoted “folk tale of Sandfish” to represent their poor state. Alaska Pollack Chinese character(明太) represents usefulness, but could not be used as temple name of Ming Taejo(明 太祖) during Joseon dynasty, and therefore could not be found in national archives. However, the fall of Ming dynasty in the year of 1644 lifted the ban and the Chinese character(明太) was first used in 1652. And finally, after 200 years, “folk tale of Alaska Pollack” was published in 1855 and 1872. Today the meaning of Chinese character (明太) has long been forgotten, and only folk tale remains.
