The purpose of this research is to explore and compare the academic discourses of Oh Cheon-Seok and Chung Beom-Mo regarding the role of education in national development. In addition, the characteristic of Korean education development theories from 1945 to 2000 will be examined and critically reviewed. Education development theory is a theory which reveals the feature of education in relation to development and national development. In this research, it is suggested as a research framework that the two educationists’ definition and purpose of education, perspectives of national development and the role of education for economic growth. The results of the study from the comparison and analysis of their arguments about education development suggest that although Oh Cheon-Seok and Chung Beom-Mo worked at different periods and carried out different national tasks, the educational development of modern Korea was considered as a significant method for national development. This research is expected to contribute to design education and educational tasks for future societies by reflecting the experience where education was highly dependent on development tasks.
