The purpose of this study was to investigate whether and how text-related features such as text difficulty and topic familiarity moderate the role of working memory in L2 text comprehension. Participants were 60 Korean college EFL learners from various academic backgrounds, whose English proficiency level was roughly estimated as high-intermediate to advanced. Regression analyses revealed that working memory capacity significantly and independently predicted L2 text comprehension, but that the contribution of working memory was rather sensitive to text-related variables. More specifically, significant contribution of working memory was found only for the text about familiar topic and at lower readability grade, whereas target language proficiency always accounted for large portion of variance in the participants" reading performance. This result implies that the role of working memory in L2 reading comprehension could be affected by other factors, rather than constant or independent. Suggestions for further studies are presented, following the limitations of this study.
