The study investigated the contribution of oral language factors listening, — vocabulary breadth and depth, and grammar—to paper-based and screen-based reading comprehension among first-year middle school students. All oral language subskills were highly correlated with both types of reading comprehension, but their contributions varied depending on the reading medium. To confirm the role of oral language factors in the two reading mediums, multiple regression analyses were conducted. The findings indicated that listening and vocabulary depth significantly contributed to paper-based reading comprehension, whereas listening and vocabulary breadth were significant for screen-based reading comprehension. Only listening contributed to both reading mediums. Although grammar showed a strong relationship with reading comprehension, it did not significantly predict comprehension in either medium. Overall, the study demonstrated that oral language factors influenced paper-based and screen-based reading comprehension differently. Nonetheless, a reciprocal relationship existed between the two modes of reading comprehension, suggesting that the ability to comprehend paper-based texts is just as important as oral language ability for screen-based reading comprehension even in the digital era.
