By employing Conversation Analysis (CA), this paper examines Korean English learners’ use of rest beats, produced in an upward continuing intonation frequently coupled with a sound stretch. It specifically focuses on those that momentarily retard the progression of a turn, rendering a beat of silence while signalling the speaker’s intention to continue. The data analysis shows that rest beats appear in the near proximity of various displays of trouble in speaking, suggesting that they are used to cover up a moment of disfluency as if they were only meant for inviting the recipient’s acknowledgement of the ongoingness of the turn. On the basis of the observation, it is proposed that rest beats serve as a ‘normalizing’ device, turning trouble to speak into a regular momentary ‘break’ and that learners strategically rely on this device at their disposal even in the absence of an overt sign of trouble. It is also contemplated that this strategic use of rest beats is partly attributed to the learners’ knowledge of Korean.
