As EFL learners are increasingly exposed to casual conversation in various contexts, it is necessary to examine EFL learners’ casual conversation in order to see if they understand and appropriately employ the conversation grammar. The current study examines the frequency and function of discourse maker like in casual conversation of English learners in different proficiency of five levels in two contexts, one where the conversation includes learners only and the other where at least one ‘foreigner (non-native speaker of Korean)’ is involved. The results were compared with those of native speakers’ conversation (NS) (249 speakers in total). The results showed that more proficient learners produced like more frequently than less proficient learners and even than NS. Also, the functional distribution of like produced by proficient learners was very similar to that of NS. More proficient learners used like as a focus marker while less proficient learners used it as a filler. However, whether there was a foreigner in the conversation did not affect either the frequency or functional distribution. The results suggest that ‘Korean-only’ context in EFL environment may help learners practice English conversation, but less proficient learners need more exposure to casual speech in order to acquire natural conversation grammar.
