This study examines whether there are systematic principles guiding the text-setting process in Korean songs, or if the alignment of lyrics and melody is arbitrary. Drawing on a corpus of 20 Korean children"s songs set in 4/4 time, the research examines how syllable position within words and the parts of speech influence text-setting. Each syllable was coded for metrical strength, position, and part of speech to determine if specific syllable positions or parts of speech are disproportionately represented at particular beats. The results indicate that the strong beat predominantly aligns with the first syllable and shows no correlation with parts of speech. Subsequent strong beats are typically found in the last syllable, with other syllables showing very low incidences of strong beats. These findings suggest that in Korean children"s songs, the alignment of strong beats with lyrics primarily serves to mark word boundaries rather than to emphasize lexical stress.
