Heidegger’s deconstructive strategy mainly consists of two questions. The first is a question about what-ness, that is, a question of how the logics themselves of traditional ontology and metaphysics proceed. The second is a question that punches a hole in the existing way of questioning by bringing into relief the question of what-ness and its supplements. At the same time, this second question is a question asking which direction his own discussion is oriented. Heidegger asks “philosophy, what is it?” or “what is the essence of truth?” or “what is metaphysics?” With these questions, he leads us to the traditionally issued form of question. Although these questions are simply the traditional form of question ‘what is ...?,’ he implies that these questions are those which shake and deconstruct the what-ness-centered (or Washeitcentered) questions.
In short, Heidegger’s ways of explanation are: first, he issues questions like ‘what is metaphysics?’ Then, these are followed by some forms of explanation, in which metaphysics is traditionally questioned in this or that way. When readers become familiar with his explanation, that is, when the reader or the audience approaches closely to the questions he issued, Heidegger abruptly asks as following: what is missing in this way of questioning? Here, the question of the what-ness is no longer a traditional metaphysical question, but it turns into a question shaking the question itself.
Now, the reader cannot help but think of the essence of metaphysics. Now, one has to ask about the underlying metaphysics which is missing in the traditional metaphysical questions and to explain it. In this process, Heidegger’s explanation of the essence of metaphysics is followed. However, Heidegger does not satisfy with it. He takes further and implies how the traditional metaphysics would be changed if one sees it with the perspective he takes.
By leading the readers to this new dimension of thought, Heidegger brings into relief the difference between the traditional ontology and his own ontology, and he elucidates the limitations and meanings of the traditional ontology. This is the way Heidegger deconstructs the Western ontology and this is his unique way of writing. Although this deconstructive way of writing is seen almost everywhere in his writings, this article will focus on his inaugural speech at professorship, What is Metaphysics?
