This study aims to clarify the position of The transcendence of the ego. This work has been commonly regarded as the first sketch where Jean-Paul Sartre painted his own thoughts through the method of Husserl’s phenomenology and as a blueprint for his entire philosophy. However, precisely speaking, The transcendence of the ego is not the result which has merely accepted the phenomenology of Husserl, and The Being and Nothingness, too, is not the outcome which just repeated or consistently developed the conclusions of The transcendence of the ego. In this context, this study would deal with next two problems. First, how Sartre escape from the philosophy of Husserl in and through this work. Second, in The Being and Nothingness, how Sartre overcome his own conclusions of The transcendence of the ego. And to studying those both sides is closely related with a problem of philosophy which is widely known. It is the problem of solipsism, in other words, the problem of the other. In The transcendence of the ego, Sartre made his original response about the problem of solipsism by criticising Husserl. By reviewing this response, we can verify how Sartre escaped from Husserl and advanced to his genuine philosophy. Moreover, in The Being and Nothingness, Sartre acknowledged himself in the wrong about the ways to overcome the problem of solipsism which had argued in The transcendence of the ego and suggested a new way to solve it. So by focusing the problem of solipsism, we can make sure of the position of The transcendence of the ego.

이 글의 목적은 사르트르의 최초의 철학적 저서인 『자아의 초월성』의 위상을 정확하게 밝혀보고자 하는 것이다. 흔히 이 저서는 사르트르가 후설의 현상학적 방법론을 통해 자신의 사유를 그려 보인 최초의 밑그림이자 사르트르 철학의 전모가 이미 그려져 있는 청사진으로 간주된다. 그러나 엄밀하게 말하자면 『자아의 초월성』은 후설의 현상학을 단순히 수용한 결과물이 아닐뿐더러, 사르트르의 대표작인 『존재와 무』 또한 『자아의 초월성』의 논의들을 단순히 반복하거나 그것을 일관적으로 발전시킨 것이 아니다. 본 논문은 『자아의 초월성』이 가지는 위상을 정확히 파악하기 위해 다음 두 가지 문제에 관하여 논의할 것이다. 첫째로는 이 저작을 기점으로 사르트르가 후설의 현상학으로부터 어떻게 벗어나고 있는가 하는 문제이며, 둘째로는 이후의 저작인 『존재와 무』에서 사르트르가이 『자아의 초월성』에서 스스로 제시한 결론들을 어떻게 극복하고 있는가 하는 문제이다. 그리고 이와 같은 두 측면의 검토는 사실 널리 알려진 하나의 철학적 문제와 연관되어 있다. 그것은 ‘유아론의 문제’, 바꾸어 말하자면 ‘타자의 문제’이다. 『자아의 초월성』에서 사르트르는 유아론의 문제에 관한 자신의 독창적인 답변을 마련하고 있다. 따라서 우리는 이 저작에서 제시되는 유아론에 대한 그의 답변을 통해 사르트르가 어떻게 후설로부터 벗어나 자신의 독자적인 사유로 나아가고 있는가를 확인할 수 있다. 이와 더불어 이후의 저작인 『존재와 무』에서 사르트르는 스스로 『자아의 초월성』에서 주장한 유아론 극복이 불충분한 것이었음을 자인하고 유아론의 문제에 관한 새로운 해결 방식을 제시하고 있다. 그러므로 우리는 유아론의 문제에 초점을 맞춤으로써 후설의 현상학에 관한 사르트르의 비판은 물론, 『자아의 초월성』으로부터 그의 주저인 『존재와 무』로 이르는 도정에서 사르트르의 사유가 어떻게 변화하고 있는가를 포착할 수 있다.
