The 20th century in Korea is marked for its chaos and change the fallout of the world war that came along with the opening-up of the peninsular to the outside world liberation from the grips of Japanese colonial rule. That is the time when breakout of Korean War in 1950 and the temporary rule by the US military administration right after the end of the war, when drive for economic development and democracy amid the social and political turmoil. And situation of nation is the on-going pursuit of globalization, which has to be understood in a different context from what was to be opened in the early 20th century. In sum, Korea has gone through a grueling, yet persistent process of modernization. It is quite understandable that the stories of Korean people who lived such a turbulent life have been fondly adopted as their literary themes by many Korean writers. The individual experiences of the writers, along with the common sufferings of their brothers and sisters of the same generation, have shaped a unique genre in the history of Korean literature. All the Koreans who went through those painful periods shared the same destiny: they were the offenders as much as they were the victims of the sufferings. Korean women, in particular, have suffered the most. In voicing the agony of the Korean women of that time, Park, Kyong-ni(박경리) is the reading Korean female writer. She was born on Oct. 28, 1926 in Chungmu(충무), Kyungnam(경남) and graduated from Chinju Cirls High School(진주여고) in 1945. The anger and frustration of Korean people as well as her own painful past have been dexterously woven into her literature, serving as the main motifs in her pursuit of literary career. She has succeeded in firmly establishing herself as one of the most respected writers in Korea. Her unique life experiences, which were occasionally wrecked by wars and political instabilities, have been a fertile soil for her literary achievement. Indeed, those experiences have been a strong backbone in sustaining her career as the most respected novelist in Korea for almost half a century. She has been extremely successful in portraying vivid pictures of social and political situations of a certain period of Korean history. She, as a writer, never forgets to tell her readers the struggling lives of Korean grass roots in those hard times. In doing so, she has transcended her personal lives into a sublime artistic experience. At 30. Park began the writer career as a writer with the recommendation of Kim Dong-Li(김동리), one of the senior leading Korean writers. During the early period - from 1956 through 1958 - she concentrated on short stories. And between 1956 and 1963 she began to write the novels that brought her the fame she is enjoying today as a novelist. From 1964 through 1969, Park wrote short and long stories for some local newspapers. Since then, she was entirely devoted to her lifetime masterpiece, "Land(토지: The title translater is Agnita Tennant, Kegan, Paul international Press In England, 1966)," until it finally came out in August 15, 1994. that took 26 years. Given that the writer poured her passion into the work for more than decades - maybe the finest hours of her life as a writer, it might be appropriate. The Land(토지) can be defined as the centerpiece of her work to her readers as well as to the writer herself. Scholars who are interested in her literary world tend to focus on this epic novel. The theme of my paper is the life and death issue in the works -a theme that is persistently appearing in her entire novels including Land(토지). To the writer, death is another face of life as was revealed in her early works: the death means a destiny and an inevitable conclusion of life. In the meantime, her later works, especially Land(토지), clearly show in what direction the writer`s spiritual journey has led her. She came to a new awakening.
