The ecology of writers is based on such an idea that the writer is in a dynamic process with an interdependent relationship between the writing process and writing environments; it refers to not only the social and cultural environment of literature, but also the growth of the writer, including the writer’s early interest, education and writing environment, the recognition of the writer’s quality and role, and significance of literature. The definition of the ecology of the writer can be described with four terms: the making of the writer, the being of the writer, the acceptance of the writer, and the influence of the writer. James Joyce as a writer can be described by using the four terms of the ecology of the writer. They are the making, the being, the influence and the acceptance of James Joyce as a writer, each has different contents and main concerns. The ecology of the translator can be introduced when the acceptance of the writer is concerned. The main concerns of the ecology of the translator are the same as that of the writer. The topics may cover the making of the translator, the being of the translator, the acceptance of the translator and the influence of the translator, centralizing on the process how the translator translates the writer’s works and the consequence how the translation is accepted and the translator is acknowledged. Qian Xiao and Jieruo Wen, the translators of the Chinese version of Ulysses, serve as case study to illustrate the idea of the ecology of the translator.
