The main trend of the literary field of the 1990s is fundamentally inclined to pursue to the limits the construction of writers' individualized field. As a Chinese contemporary avant-garde writer, Sutong played a very important role in this field at the end of the 20th century. Especially his viewpoint of life is unique one from other writers in these point : weak but rigid life itself, ardvous struggles for the bitter maintenance of life, paying attention to the worship of life etc. made Sutong's works full of vigour, with which he display his strength in the life style, the method of maintaining life, the consciousness of life.
In this article I focused on what made Sutong's works different from other writers and what were the differences among the female characters in his literary texts. So I started with inspecting into the status of women in the man-centered society. From this, I got a clear understanding of the situation of women's existence at that time. The women in his novel fought each other for themselves, and after heated struggling they felt a complete tragedy without exception. Through these analysis, I had preliminary types of female characters.
In addition, it was worth of looking over the construction of the story itself, the portraying of nature, his experience of life, and the psychological description, which make a distinction among other writers.
