Did the presence of the 18th presidential election, which was held approximately eight months after the 19th National Assembly election, have a crucial effect on voters’ decision to cast their ballots in the 19th National Assembly election? If so, how much? This paper makes a theoretical and empirical effort to address this research question and to explore the relationship between the presence of effective political leaders and voters’ decision to vote.
By adopting the theoretical logic of both the presidential coattail effect hypothesis and the rational choice theory with regard to voting, this paper creates the hypothesis that voters are inclined to make their decisions to cast their ballots in the legislative election on the basis of whether or not they have their own preferential choice of an effective political leader as an influential presidential candidate for the presidential election. The statistical result of the binomial logistic regression analysis reveals that the presence of such effective political leaders exerts statistically very significant influence on voters’ decision to vote.
