The complete interpretation of the utterance must include the utterance meaning obtained from the linguistic / non-linguistic context or from associated prosodic and paralinguistic features, let alone the sentence meaning which is directly related to the grammatical and lexical features. In this paper, my main concern is to see how the conversational implicatures in accordance with felicity conditions could be interpreted, and to make a comprehensive study of the fact that a pragmatic interpretation, when allied with an entailment analysis, is superior to an approach in terms of logical or pragmatic presuppositions. The results shown in this study can be summarized as follows. 1) A discourse contains elements of meaning which are presupposed in that they are already part of the `context` or `pragmatic universe of discourse`; and elements which are asserted in that they are not part of the context. The notions of topic and presupposition belong to the former; those of comment, illocutionary force, and conversational implicature the latter. 2) Grice`s `co-operative principles`, especially maxims of relevance, which could actually be too vague to be put into practice for a description of meaning, must be supplemented by Smith/Wilson`s definition of relevance. 3) It can be identified that if the context changes, so does the set of conversational implicatures; the literal meaning is not determined by context, and that the conversational implicature tends to become lexicalized as literal meaning as is shown in the typical example `Good-bye` derived from `God be with you.`
