The purpose of this paper is to survey and examine the Speech Act and Implicature of Jeju Dialect. The Speech Act and Lmplicature are very important in linguistics, especially semantics and pragmatics. At first, the Speech Act was studied by J. Austin and Grice. There are three acts in Speech Act of J. Austin; Locutionary Act, Illocutionary Act and Perlocutionary Act. Also, there are two implicatures : the Conventional Implicature and the Conversational Implicature. The Conversational Implicature is divided into the Generalized Conversational Implicature and the Particularized Conversational Implicature. The Cooperative Principle of Grice is very important and is observed in living communication. The Cooperative Principle is composed of the four Maxims of Conversation; the Maxims of Quantity, the Maxims of Quality, the Maxim of Relevance and the Maxim of Manner. On the basis of the Speech Act and Implicature, I surveyed and examined Jeju Dialect. Anyway, Jeju Dialect has been kept for a long time, but now Jeju is going to become Free International City. Therefore Jeju Dialect will disappear some day. We must keep and use Jeju Dialect through the research on the Speech Act and Implicature. In conclusion, the Speech Act and Implicature of Dialects in Korea will have to be studied further.
