This article focuses on 19th-century Japanese understanding of naval warfare and Yi Sun-shin during the Imjin War, based on two historical works: the first general history book on the Imjin War published in the early 19th century, Kawaguchi Choju"s Seikaniryaku and another prominent history book about the Imjin war printed in the late 19th century, Kinoshita Shinkou"s Houtaikouseikaishinshi.
Seikaniryaku provides a general description of main naval battles during the Imjin War. However, Kawaguchi Choju left out some of the battles at the time and erred in historical facts. The limitation of Seikaniryaku stems from the relatively low level of scholarship in history and the historical view in the early 19th century. Nonetheless, warships and weaponry of the Joseon naval forces are valued highly in Seikaniryaku. Supplemented many historical materials published in Joseon, Houtaikouseikaishinshi shows a higher standard of understanding on the naval warfare during the Imjin War. But there are still many errors in many parts of the work"s descriptions on the naval warfare, in addition to several distortion of the historical facts. These problems are derived from Japan"s lack of knowledge about naval forces and sea power until the end of 19th century. After Japan"s improved understanding on naval power and the introduction of new Koran materials, these problems could be overcome only in the 20th century.
