The Donghak Peasant Revolution lasted only for a year, in 1894. Nevertheless, it hinted at a prelude to the Korean modern history and helped to reorganize the international political system of the East Asia. The perception of the Donghak Peasant Revolution has changed for about 120 years since then. Also, many scholars have conducted its historical revaluation. The way to commemorate the Donghak Peasant Revolution varied according to its time and subject. Just after the Revolution, it focused on the commemoration of the rebel army groups and this tendency lasted for quite a long time. Around 1994, the centenary of the Donghak Peasant Revolution, there were much progress in academia, and the commemoration service was greatly invigorated because of the heated discussions over the ways to commemorate the centenary. This led to the establishment of the Special Act on Donghak and to the recovery of the bereaved families" honors in national level. As a number of commemoration organizations were established spontaneously all across the country and the Donghak Peasant Revolution Foundation, the headquarters of the commemoration organizations, was established, the commemoration service got on the right track. At this point the commemoration service of the Donghak Peasant Revolution needs to set up a new goal. Understanding the Donghak Peasant Revolution correctly and promoting it to the public has been its original goal. Now it should aim at investigating its significance in the world history as well as promoting it in global level. The new goal of the commemoration service should be the globalization of the Donghak Peasant Revolution.
