This essay focuses on and deals with the relationship between English Puritans and the Assembly of Westminster from 1643 to 1649. Both groups were very deeply related to each other in various ways including social, cultural, political and religious. During this time period in England, there were conflicts on both sides surrounding the issues of theology and church government. They debated about granting authority to one of three religious groups-Episcopalians, Independents, or Presbyterians, and the English Parliament summoned all of them in order to sort out these matters and issues.
The Church of Scotland assembled in Edinburgh in 1643 and decided to send their commissioners to the parliament held in London. The Scottish commissioners comprised of extremely devoted and active members who believed England should believe in the Presbyterian faith. During the parliamentary meeting, the Scottish representatives drafted and argued that their Presbyterian government is the best among all church policies and asked that England adopted this to the entire country. However, Oliver Cromwell, the protector of the Kingdom at that time, rejected the whole document for various reasons. Although the Parliament had turned down their Presbyterian theology and church government, the Church of Scotland continued to uphold it and abide by it as their confession of faith.
Since 1925, the Korean church, particularly the Assembly of the Presbyterian Church, Hap-dong, have been confessing the Westminster confession of faith as the right standard among all confessions in Europe. However, the more conservative churches that believe in the Westminster confession of faith have been challenged by the liberal churches in Korea who claim that the former are too conservative. Nevertheless, the conservative presbyterian churches have kept the tradition of reformed theology as much as possible, even though liberal churches have hence drafted a new confession of faith to reflect the modern minds and thoughts.
