As everyone knows, the Westminster Confession of Faith was written by 151 representatives (121 pastors, 30 church members=10 noblemen, and 20 members of the National Assembly) and 8 more pastors and elders from the Scottish Presbyterian Church at Westminster Abbey in from July 1643 to February 1649 by the request of the Parliament of England. At the time, theologians held a total of 1160 meetings during 6 years and chose the Westminster Confession of Faith, the Larger/Shorter Catechism, the Directory for the Public Worship of God, and the form of Presbyterian Church Government as the standard documents of religion. England was in great chaos at the time of this selection.
In those days, several parties including the Erastian Party, the Independent Party, and the Presbyterian Party were in sharp confrontations with each other. Their opposing arguments primarily involved the exercise of sovereign power, basically driven by conflicts between the Royalist Party and the National Congress on whether the country should uphold the divine right of kings or the divine right of Christ and whether it should adopt the Erastian System or the Elder System. However, the Westminster Confession of Faith and the Larger/Shorter Catechism created by the general assembly of Westminster established the latter, the divine right of Christ and the Elder System into the standard documents of religion.
This clarified that Christ is the Lord and the God of creation. Therefore, all men in power need to hail His name and obey Him. Therefore, as the Westminster Larger catechism states Question 1. What is the chief and highest end of man? Answer: Man’s chief and highest end is to glorify God, and fully to enjoy him forever. This went beyond the sixteenth century reformationists’ theology centered around Salvation Theory and Church Theory but emphasized that Christ is the only true King and Ruler against the absolute royal authority and that glorifying Him is the purpose of life for Christians.
Ever since, the Presbyterian Church confirms people’s faith through the acceptance of this Westminster Confession of Faith at each church, presbytery, assembly, and function. This document teaches Christians on living a life of faith based the Bible, establishing values, particularly on cultivating character, and exercising caution against heresy. This directly and indirectly shows how the Puritans later wisely handled their persecution during the turbulent seventeenth century.
