When it comes to researches on literary films in the 1960’s, they simply focused more on how the films had been made based on modern novels of Korea or they paid greater attention to what kinds of changes the novels had gone through when they were being filmized. No one would deny how reluctant the previously-conducted researches were to actually read this topic, making a film out of an actual novel, critically from a cultural point of view.
Making a film of this particular novel is, however, rather a result of how cultural and political contexts of the times are applied merely than a matter of choice to re-produce a novel as a film. In the light of that, both original novels and literary films are considered key evidences for audiences’ being able to critically read social arguments of the times. In particular, what is being to the fore in relation to the cultural and political features of literary films in the 1960’s is how the films had dealt with space. As observed in 〈The Seaside Village〉, when it comes to these local literary films with the pre-modern times applied as spatial backgrounds and other literary films that would reflect some contemporary cities such as 〈fog〉, the literary films fulfill their responsibility to represent spatial features of the times. What makes it even more interesting is that in case of films that are regarded as a symbol of either so-called beauty of local lyricism or the modern times, all of them are taking critical attitudes towards a city space. That is an evidence of how an identity of a subject of the times was being realized.
As described above, as for cultural politics of space, it basically deals with this premise for conflicts of arguments on space and locations. After all, through negotiations and conflicts between dominant discourses and resisting discourses, this study has a discussion on issues of space and power as well as space and subjects as understanding space as a place where diverse meanings and implications compete against each other.
