Although Nokseong was published in 1919 as Korea’s first film magazine, there are few studies investigating and interpreting its contents. This article analyzes the film tie-ins of Nokseong in comparison with the original film, and attempts to measure the significance of the novelization of Hollywood films in Korean film history. This discussion centers on the following characteristics of Nokseong. First, Nokseong introduced the novelization of films in Korea. The novelization of films is distinguished from a ‘film novel’, which indicates a short story written for film production during the late 1920s and 1930s of Korea. By examining the factors involved in the novelization of foreign films, we can gauge the conditions of the Korean film industry at that time. Second, Nokseong adapted the characters and the endings of the stories to better suit its Korean audience. To that point, the rural town was represented as an ideal space and the transformed characters were appropriated to the Korean culture. This is studied as the potential key to embodying the narrative features common in Korean films of the colonial period. Third, many of the foreign films novelized by Nokseong were Hollywood Bluebird films. This shows that the early Korean film was already conceiving of Hollywood films as a criterion for the national cinema of Korea.
