This paper examines the attitude of confucian scholars in Honam province and its meaning in movement for long petition delivery to Paris, through which confucian scholars internally and externally expressed a will for the independence of state and nation in 1919.
Various school ties such as Myunwoo Jongseok Gwak in Namin faction including Nosa Jeongjin Ki, Ganjae Woo Jeon, Yeonjae Byeongseon Song, and Myunam Ikhyun Choi in Noron faction coexisted in Honam province in the late 19th century. Among these school ties, Ganjae Woo Jeon, Yeonjae Byeongseon Song, and the like began Jajeong movement early, and most of Nosa school ties and Myunam school ties that led an army raised in the cause of justice also began Jajeong movement in the 1910s.
It was not possible for the overall inclination of Honam confucian scholars to get out of this Jajeong atmosphere at a time of March 1 Pro-independence movement in 1919. As King Gojong demised, Honam confucian scholars held Manggokrye in many places. And they came up to the capital in order to participate in Insan of King Gojong. Some Honam confucian scholars participated in the movement for long petition delivery to Paris, which made a petition for the independence of state and nation besides 3-year mourning for King Gojong and the restoration of King Sunjong. Only 9 persons participated in the movement in Honam province for long petition delivery to Paris, as Huseok Junseon Oh, Nosa school ties, or Ganjae Woo Jeon, and the like who were highly influential at that time insisted upon Jajeong movement. With followers of Myunam Ikhyun Choi who had participated in Korea Independence Militia movement at the center, followers having Yeonjae, Nosa, and Myunwoo school ties combined and signed their name.
However, it is thought to be considerably significant in that they signed their name, transcending above school ties and faction, and many changes took place, such as raising war funds for Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea or leaning toward socialism after the movement for long petition delivery to Paris.
