Relatively little attention has been paid to how future English teachers perceive the teaching of English with English as the medium of instruction, known as Teaching English in English (TEE). Studies which investigated such preservice teachers at the secondary level are even scarcer. To fill this gap, a survey questionnaire was administered to 90 Korean university students who were enrolled in a teacher preparation track to become middle or high school teachers. Findings indicated that although these preservice teachers seemed to acknowledge the effectiveness of TEE classes, they were quite skeptical of the idea of teaching English with the English language as a sole medium of instruction. Furthermore, most of them agreed on the use of English as much as possible in the English classes they would teach in the future. However, they did not see much benefit in not using students’ L1 at all. The findings of the study emphasize the application of TEE in teacher training at a practical level, such as introducing successful models of TEE classes.
