In this essay, I explore popular perceptions on kamikaze pilots in Japanese society. Focusing on the visual medium of films and its social role in reproducing certain ideas and symbols, I will examine the strategies and aesthetics of the film medium in representing kamikaze pilots. For this purpose, I will first examine the genealogy and characteristics of kamikaze genre. Second, I will probe the process in which the ideas of bushido (武士道) are aestheticize by focusing on the film, Aa Kessen Kokutai (1974). The film is acclaimed as the representative film in the kamikaze genre.
Finally, I will examine the recent films on kamikaze pilots including, Yamato：The Last Battle (2000) in order to locate the reasons that family and women are positioned as the supreme value for the kamikaze activities. By reviewing films on kamikaze produced for the last 30 years in Japan, I argue that these films play the ideological role in mobilizing Japanese society for wars abroad.
