Many countries in the far east Asia such as Joseon and China focused on arrangement of the national rituals which were required for consolidating the systems and order of the state and the Royal family. The traditions of Joseon Dynasty were continued for the years under King Gojong’s rule. Moreover, King Gojong required to rearrange the national rituals in accordance with accession of the new Emperor and establishment of the Empire of Daehan. It was necessary to stand more independent and free from the Ching dynasty. For the purpose, the Emperor organized ‘Saryeso’ in 1897 and published Daehan-Yejeon, the book regarding the national rituals of the Empire in the end of the year.
Daehan-Yejeon was written based on the structure of Kukjo-Oryeui. It was quite natural to employ the national rituals as a foundation of the state, which aims to succeed orthodoxy of the state. In addition, the Empire mainly referred to Daemyungjibrye and Myunghoijeon for Imperial rituals.
Daehan-Yejeon in ten volumes, consists of an enthronement ceremony, Seorye and Uijoo. An enthronement ceremony describes about Goyuje, ritual dedicated to the heaven and the earth, accession, and follow-up rituals. Seorye, based on the structure of Kukjo-Oryeui-seorye was distinctive in some aspects ; first, Uijoo of the Empire was newly added ; second, it upgraded the position of a feudal state to that of an imperial state by improving the systems ; third, unrealistic or unnecessary ceremony or articles or Uijoo was eliminated. Taegukjeon, the royal audience chamber where King Gojong stayed, was the nucleus of Uijoo.
