This paper is written in order to look around the outcomes and limits of recent Juvenile Literature with juvenile novels published in 2007 which dealt juvenile sexuality. In our society, for a long time, juveniles are regarded as nonsexual existence and the object of protection. Yet multifarious ‘problems’ - teenage girls’ sexual exploitation, teenagers’ pregnancy, abortion, sexual violence- in real life show they are not irrelevant to matters of sex. Focusing on this phenomenon, recently, a lot of literary works that dealt juvenile sexuality have been published.
〈Catching Mice〉 is a meaningful work directly dealt with juvenile sexuality and women’s body considered taboos in juvenile literature. Due to the failing of writer’s keeping distance from reality, however, it shows its limit by confining juveniles in existing ideology, ‘watching’ and ‘protection’. 〈Hwa Ran〉 uses the badly distorted and exposed body of teenage girl as its main theme. But the narrative consistently using dys·phe·mism and cynicism keeps readers from understanding its character and makes the story unpleasant narrative of enlightenment. 〈The Red Signal Lamp〉 is weaved at the far away place from existing narratives’ repetitive problems, ‘problematic family = problematic teenagers’. By doing so, this book makes clear that our society’s distorted recognition makes juvenile sexuality problematic.
The books cited above, well reflect our society’s ‘problematic’ reality, and certainly are getting some results as literary works of developing period. But they are too overwhelmed by tormented reality to imagine beyond the painful situation. The only way not to make juvenile sexuality ‘problematic’ is to acknowledge juveniles’ sexual independence and give back their lost independence.
