In the transition period of the Korean modern literary history from the middle phase of 1930’s to the end of Japanese imperialism the arguments for the reorganization of the novel continued in sequence during the whole period, and so it is most important theme for our recognizing the aspect how the writers of that age confronted with the crisis caused by the military fascism of Japanese imperial.
The arguments for the reorganization of the novel, led by Kim Nam-cheon, developed in sequence the doctrine of 「the denunciation literaur―moral―the manners novel―the reorganization of the Roman(G.)―observation literature」. The doctrine of the renunciation literature in the former half, and the doctrine of the manners novel stood on the central axis.
This study is focused on the doctrine of renunciation literature that had been originated from the debate about 〈mul〉 with Im Hwa in 1933, and was formed in relation with the arguments of the methodology of the literary creation in nearly 4 years from 1933. The doctrine of the manners novel was in fact the upgrade version of it that reinforced the theory of the type. In short the arguments of the reorganization of the novel developed from the doctrine of the renunciation literature as the basic frame to the doctrine of the manners novel.
The basic frame consists of three momental elements. The first is the effort to restart the novelist’s career of Kim Nam-cheon that was interrupted by the aftereffect of the debate about 〈mul〉. The second is Kamei-Katuichiro(龜井勝一郞)’s term ‘Denudation of Mask(假面の剝奪)’ as an idea that promoted Kim Nam-cheon’s doctrine of the denunciation literature. The third is the F. Engels‘s conception of realism and G. Lukacs’s commentary of it that advanced the denunciation literature to the novel of realism. But without accurate knowing the theory of the type, the doctrine of the denunciation literature could not have the practical contents as the method of the literary creation until the manners novel was proposed at the next stage.
