The subject of this article is the criticism of Kim Nam-cheon in the last period of Japanese Imperialism. His criticism needs scrutinizing exquisitely, for it shows both his critical conclusive point and one of confrontal methods against the theory of "Overcoming of the Modern" and "the East Asian Community,"-contemporary dominant ideologies. This articles proceeds with
three following issues.
First, On the method of citing Lukacs. "The Fate of the Novel" widely accepted Lukacs' "Novel as the bourgeois epic". Their works agree with each other on their vision of the novel-novel is a typical genre of the bourgeois era; it intervenes and investigates the social corruption and contradictions; it is in the very middle of its turning point. Meanwhile, Kim didn't accept the notion
of Lukacs-"The era of socialist realism shall come." It's right to say that Kim accepted Lukacs partly, but we cannot regard it as a arbitrary acceptance. In order to escape from the mechanical schematization of socialist realism, Kim paid more attention to the detour of Lukacs' critical realism.
Secondly, on his theory of realism in the last period of Japanese Imperialism.
He supports realism as a critical weapon of distorted humanity in the period of egoism and total human status which will overcome the separation between individual and society. He puts an ideal human status as an aim and realist method as a practical process of pursuing it. Also it is the process of self-resolving his former dichotomous thought. Through this formula, Kim could accept Lukacs' vision on modal approach to the ancient epic.
Lastly, on the relationship between Kim and the theory of "Overcoming of the Modern" and "the East Asian Community" that is one of the contemporary dominant ideologies. He seemed to approve these ideologies for the sake of appearance, but he emphasized the differences of each nation. Moreover, he insisted that emphasis on the oriental be one of the great many counter-theories responding to the crisis of the western modern. Through this arguments, Kim kept his distance against contemporary totalitarianism and orientalism.
