Examined in this article, are the Joseon government's recognition of the history and vestiges of the Northern region of the Korean peninsula, and the discussions that ensued regarding how to honor and renovate them. Such task seems to have continued since the enshrinement(追) of Queen Shindeok Wang'hu/神德王后's tablet at the "Main Residence(本宮)" in the 21st year of king Sukjong's reign, and through the end of his regin.
With the enshrinement of queen Shindeok Wanghu, the "Main Residence" was newly recognized as the home of the dynasty's very foundation, and people got more interested in all the historical vestiges that were located in the North, and not to mention the history itself. King Sukjong actually played an important role in creating such atmosphere, as he continued to emphasize the foundation of the dynasty and the meaning that the Northern region had, in his own writings('御製').
With the king having a keen interest in the Northern region, the vassals as well came to display certain interests and also some policy agendas. Reprinting(復刻, using printing types modeled after the letters featured in previous writings and publications) Paljun Docheob/八駿圖帖, which illustrated the Paljun-ma horse of the dynasty founder king Taejo, in the fashion of Yongbi Eocheon-ga/龍飛御天歌, provided a springboard for future efforts. Through that process Yongbi Eocheon-ga came to garner more attention, and the history of the Northern region drew more curiosity and appreciation. Later the private study Dokseo-dang/讀書堂 in Ham'heung was reconstructed and a stone tablet was erected. Excavation of past history and vestiges inside the Northern region later continued, and all the discoveries were commemorated. All these efforts paved a way for the similar attempts that were taken by following kings such as Yeongjo and Jeongjo.
