In this article, the meaning of the so-called "Four Elements/Seven Emotions"("Sa"dan Chil"jeong/四端七情") Debate is examined, in the context of Joseon politics. Discussions of the "Seven Emotions" began for the first time, in the wake of all kinds of criticism were being targeted at Yeon"san-gun"s ruling of the country. And then, after he was replaced by King Jungjong, people started to emphasize the importance of the king"s own "character-building" efforts("Su"shin/修身"), in order to bring a sort of "Renewal("Yu"shin/維新")" to the governance of the country. In the process, the people"s understanding of the "Seven Emotions" concept considerably grew as well. And going through all the purges of the Gi"myo and Eul"sa years, the Confucian scholars, while still having a negative view upon the political arena, started to express their own ideas concerning the issue of "serving the government."
Yi Hwang, who distinctively differentiated and also tried to separate the "good" from "evil," was naturally not too fond of the political arena of the time, and chose not to offer his service to the government. On the other hand, Gi Dae-seung, allegedly (according to himself) as the representative of the Gi"myo Sarim faction, chose to enlist himself in the government. Yi Ih as well argued that serving the government was not a matter of choice, but was rather an obligation. He believed it was not possible to completely differentiate good from evil in real life, and that the good could only come through the people"s active participation in the governing.
