In 1683, the 9th year of King Sukjong's reign, in response to the suggestion by Song Shi-yeol(宋時烈), King Sukjong decided to honor King Taejo(太祖), the founder of the Choson dynasty, with an additional posthumous title(諡號). This additional title was first suggested because of the popular view that his original posthumous title lacked a sufficient number of characters. Later however, in the course of debate over this, it fueled a reassessment of King Taejo's actions regarding his decision to withdraw his forces from the Wihwa-do area(‘威化島回軍') and return to the capital to found a new dynasty, which also inspired a reevalation of King Hyojong(孝宗) to justify his Northern campaign(北伐論). Members of the Noron(老論) and the Soron(少論) parties expressed different opinions in evaluating his actions, differences which were documented in The Annals of the Joseon dynasty(朝鮮王朝實錄). However, there were no party-based arguments presented in the discussions at the time. When later Song Shi-yeol found himself at the center of criticism, a controversy ensued where people began to view this matter from their party-based agendas, connecting this dispute with the practice of honoring past kings with posthumous titles. The task of honoring King Taejo with a (new) posthumous title was in fact led by King Sukjong. As the project progressed, he listened to what the officials had to say and accepted the general consensus(公論) while promoting his own ruling authority in the sense that he was a successor to King Taejo. His efforts helped create a political concept that the foundation of the Choson dynasty was based upon Jonju(尊周) righteousness, and in a situation where the Chinese Ming dynasty no longer existed, this concept became the logical basis for the Choson people's argument that Choson was the true successor to the Junghwa(中華) legacy.
